From the schoolhouse to the school board

April Hennessey is running for school board trustee for District 2 of the Monroe County Community School Corporation. The former MCCSC teacher lives in Bloomington with her family and is the parent of children currently in the school system.

April was an educator in the English Department at Bloomington High School North, both part-time and full-time, from Fall 2013 until Spring 2018. In that time, she taught a range of classes, including 9 and 10 Honors English, Core 40 English 10, Mythology, American Literature, and Advanced College Placement courses W131 and L202. April’s classes ranged from high ability classrooms to inclusion classrooms with students covering nearly the entire spectrum of need and ability.

These experiences gave April a front row seat to the Herculean efforts that our district undertakes each day for our kids. But she also lived and breathed the gaps we’ve yet to fill. Like many teachers, April’s desk was stocked with necessities—food, bandaids, menstrual products, extra school supplies—purchased every month with her own money for the kids who passed through her classroom each day. In addition to her classroom responsibilities, April was the faculty sponsor for the United Students Gay-Straight Alliance, providing a safe space for LGBTQIA+ students to convene. She also served on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committees at both the building and district level.

April left MCCSC in 2018. This was due, in part, to shifting life needs, but she also felt strongly that teachers’ voices were constrained by the district’s various laws, policies, and structures. However, her ongoing support and love for her students has never wavered. From references for students moving into adulthood to letters of recommendation to mentorships, her commitment to MCCSC and its families didn’t end when she left the classroom. It has been—and will continue to be—a through-line of April’s life and her heart.

That is why April Hennessey is running for school board trustee of MCCSC District 2.

A few words from former students

“I know you don’t get to pick who got to be in your class, but I’m glad I got to be in yours last year. Teachers don’t get as much recognition as they deserve, so I’d like to say Thank You! You do so much for your students, along with the kids involved in United Students... We love you Ms. Hennessey, and thank you!”

“You are an awesome teacher. I am sorry that I probably give you gray hairs. I’ll try to make an improvement. You are one of the best English teachers in the school. It means a lot that my mom trusts you to email and ask questions when needed.”

“As a future teacher, you are such an inspiration, and I have enjoyed being in your class and learning from you. I very much appreciate the individual support you gave me to make me a better student. Your guidance will certainly help me be a better writer and student in the coming years. ”
